3 top tips to teach your kids about sustainability

They say it takes a village to raise a child, and I reckon it takes a whole household to make a home eco-friendly! It really is a team effort.  Teaching kids from a young age means they will grow up with an appreciation of the natural world, and the importance of us treading lightly on the planet - both of which will set them up for a greener future.

Here are a few simple ways to educate kids on being eco-friendly.

1. Recycling

You might be surprised but kids as young as 2-3 years will love getting involved in recycling. Start by teaching them which bin things go into, and ask them to help dispose of items (once clean of course). My guys get a real kick of out being involved, and now they’re the ones policing the recycling and keeping the adults in line!

2. Conserving energy

Toddlers love buttons and switches, right?! So get them involved in turning off the lights or appliances (with supervision of course!) when leaving a room. Teaching kids about the importance of saving electricity will be one that’s really beneficial in the long run.

3. Developing a connection with nature

Connecting them with the natural world at every opportunity is really important, and something you will all enjoy. You could try growing some herbs or small plants. You don’t need much space at all to start, and the kids will be so proud when they see the fruits of their labour. And now is the perfect time to do it while we’re spending so much time at home.

Lead by example

Of course, kids learn much more from what we do, than what we say, so setting a good example by our consistent actions is the best education. Talk to them about why you select particular products at the supermarket, the impacts food waste on the environment, or why it’s important to bring reusable bags when shopping.

This way, you know the future will be in good hands.
